Frequently asked questions
What does it mean that Volute Wine is made of Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) wine?
Wines in France are categorized according to a four-tier grading system. At the bottom of the classification hierarchy are Vin de Table wines from a mix of several grapes, sometimes from different European Union countries. At the next level are Vin de Pays wines, and then Vin de Qualité Supérieure wines. Volute is not produced from any of the wines in the lower three grades.
The higher quality wines are classified as Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) wines, the only grade of wines that comprise Volute. AOC wines are strictly ruled concerning everything from growing methods and production to localization, grape variety, and minimum alcohol content. AOC wines are analyzed and taste tested as part of this stringent legislation, which has been enacted to provide a measure of guarantee for excellent quality in AOC wines.
Does Volute Wine contain artificial additives?
Volute Wine is premium Bordeaux AOC classified, and does not contain any artificial additives.
Why is Volute Wine packaged in aluminum bottles instead of glass?
We chose aluminum not only because it brings qualities identical to glass in terms of compatibility with wine, but it also protects the wine from light, which accelerates the (bad) aging process.
Our bottles are unbreakable, single-serve and lightweight, making them truly portable.
Aluminum is 100-percent recyclable, can be infinitely recycled, and results in significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, thanks to it lower weight.
It has a lower overall carbon footprint than wine in traditional glass bottles.
How is a bottle of Volute Wine more eco-friendly than a glass bottle?
The Volute bottles are made of aluminum, which is recycled at a rate of over 50% in the US (and over 90% in Sweden) vs. 20% for glass. The main reason for this is due to weight: for the same volume of wine, the volute bottles weigh 4 times less than glass bottles, and transporting glass bottles for recycling often costs and pollutes more than producing it from raw materials.
Producing a Volute bottle from recycled aluminum requires about 90% less raw materials, 50% less water and pollutes 50% less air.
Then comes the transportation. Due to its lower weight, transporting Volute Wine - remember it's imported from France - generates 30% less carbon emissions than transporting the same volume of wine in glass bottles. That’s the gain you typically realize by switching from a gasoline only car to a hybrid.
How come Volute is not sealed with cork stoppers?
Volute Wine is meant for enjoying anywhere — no corkscrew or wineglasses necessary. Aside from that key benefit (we know we're not the only ones excited about wine sans opener or stemware), traditional cork stoppers can become tainted with a substance called trichloroanisol (TCA), which — while not harmful — invariably ruins the wine it contacts by imparting an unpleasant musty odor. So while cork does possess good resiliency and sealing abilities, Volute prevents this common wine pitfall by sealing the wine with metal-cap closures.
A June 2008 survey in Wine Business Monthly found that screw caps prevent unwanted oxidation better than natural cork. While Volute is currently sealed with metal pry-off caps, pending favorable results from our lab’s oxidation tests, we plan to introduce easy-off screw caps for added convenience. We want to ensure that Volute Wine reaches consumers with the freshest possible taste.
More on the flavor front: In 2007, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. transitioned to bottling its brews with an innovative new pry-off cap designed to keep beer fresher than the former twist-off style. The new bottle cap features a more effective oxygen barrier due to its density. Testing lid-lining materials since 1991, Sierra Nevada was reluctant to give up its twist-offs, but the new cap design won the brewery over because of the reduction in oxygen transfer the consequential flavor preservation.
What is the volume of wine in each Volute bottle?
Each bottle contains 187.5ml of wine (or 6.3 oz) which is exactly 1/4th the volume of a standard 750ml bottle of wine.
What is the alcohol content of Volute Wine?
Our wines contain 12.5-percent alcohol.
Is wine fattening?
Wine is a fat-free drink and contains zero cholesterol.
Does wine have a lot of carbs?
Volute Wine contains about 1.4 to 3 grams of carbohydrates per 6-ounce bottle serving (1.4 grams for the White, 2.5 grams for the Rosé and 3 grams for the Red.)
How many calories are in Volute Wine?
Volute Wine has about 140 calories per 6-ounce bottle serving.
What are sulfites and should I worry about them in wine?
All wines contain sulfites. Sulfites occur naturally during wine fermentation and prevent oxidation and bacterial growth. Roughly one in 100 people may be allergic to sulfites. Sulfites are not the cause of “red wine headache,” as is evidenced by the presence of sulfites in dried fruit as well. Unless dried fruit gives you a headache, too.
